The 2008 H.R. survey is our third of the decade. The other surveys were conducted in 2001 and 2005. Since participating companies are not identical from one survey to another, differences in the numbers reported can include sample variations as well as actual changes in the industry. Generally, variations from year-to-year have reflected actual industry changes.
Table 1 provides the mean average wages for the last three surveys. In addition, the 2008 data is also characterized by the median and mode averages. The mean is the typical average where the wage answers are totaled and divided by the sample size. The median is the middle wage from the wages that are arrayed from lowest to highest. The mode is the wage that was most often reported.
