The World Is Changing Rapidly

When I started working with the pallet industry in 1977, pallet companies mostly functioned in their local markets. The concept of the pallet industry functioning in a global market wasn’t even close to being on the radar screen. That was yesterday. Today, international issues include phytosanitary pallet treatment, pallet management, pallet leasing, future RFID tag potential, international lumber suppliers, standardization, etc. The list grows longer each year. Never before in the history of pallets have there been more reasons to keep up with international logistic issues.

So, there has never been a better time for a progressive pallet company owner to want to know about worldwide issues that may affect him in the future. That future may often be long range, but the time window for changes is shrinking.

Did you know that approximately every four years the pallet industry holds an international meeting, called Interpal? And did you know that the next Interpal (Interpal VI) will be held August 30-September 2 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada? This sixth Interpal is the third one to be held on North American soil (Interpal II in Ottawa, Canada and Interpal IV in Nashville, Tennessee). Interpal VI will be hosted by the Canadian Wood Pallet and Container Association.

If the pattern follows past trends, this will be the only North American Interpal during this decade. Both the timing and location are in our favor. The hotel price for Interpal VI is a bargain when converted into U.S. dollars. Readers who have never been to the Northwest will find the region to be spectacular. People who have never experienced an Interpal meeting will find the environment to be interesting, challenging, and invigorating. Interpal VI is a tax deductible business expense; so it can serve as an excellent vacation value as well as a once in a decade business opportunity.

In addition, this Interpal offers a tax deductible business/pleasure duo never seen before in our industry. During the week after Interpal VI there is an optional Alaskan cruise where you can enjoy the double benefit of a beautiful Alaskan cruise and business networking opportunities with industry leaders from around the globe. It is my understanding that optional morning meetings will provide a gathering place for those who wish to participate.

For years, I have accepted the challenge of offering some insights to my pallet friends, but I have avoided trying to state emphatically that readers should or should not take a particular action. This month, however, I would be remiss if I did not encourage each and every reader to at least consider this international pallet meeting opportunity. The CWPCA will have to consider releasing part of its block of hotel rooms in Victoria sometime in April. The association has secured an excellent room rate for Interpal delegates, but it does not want to be held accountable for unsold rooms. For this reason, I advise anybody who believes Interpal offers an excellent business/vacation opportunity to consider making a decision before it is too late to get such a good deal.

Interpal VI will kickoff with opening ceremonies on Tuesday evening, August 30. Wednesday, August 31, there will be a full day of educational sessions. Thursday, September 1, Interpal VI will sponsor a trade show where exhibitors can provide information on how their products and services can benefit you. The last day of Interpal features visits to Canadian sawmills and a farewell dinner. A spouse program is available for delegates who bring their spouses.

Agenda items will include discussions about the global marketplace and economy, environmental issues influencing the wooden pallet/packaging industry, a global review of the pallet and container industry, a global report on lumber availability, how the IPPC-ISPM 15 will influence pool pallets, and the pros and cons of pallet standardization.

                      See you in Victoria.
