Supplier Spotlight: Sering Provides Service for Industrial Saw Bars

Sering Sawmill Machinery Co, Inc. which provides sawmill equipment to the pallet and sawmill industries, now offers services for industrial saw bars.

Sering Sawmill Machinery was founded by Dave Sering in 1983. The legacy continues as the business is now being guided by, his son, Marty Sering. Marty’s wife, December, and their 3 children, April, Taylor and Spencer play a major role in all aspects of the company. Sering manufactures heavy duty sawmill equipment to the pallet and sawmill industries. They are proud to be one of the smaller, major players in the industry. Their equipment is at the very highest producing hardwood and softwood mills worldwide.

Sering Sawmill Machinery acquired Chain Bar Repairing from Portland, Oregon, which had been in business for over 60 years. The business manufactured and repaired saw bars for large industrial type saws, such as lumber package saws, log bucking deck saws and portable chain sawmills. As part of the acquisition, Sering organized a separate business, Chain Bar by Sering. They continue to manufacture and service bars for all the major manufacturers of saws, including Blue Babe, LM Equipment, Holtec®, Pacific Trail and others.

Marty’s great-grandfather, Al Sering, was involved in the creation of the Blue Babe Brand in 1945. Blue Babe is the originator of the first deck saws and lumber package saws in the industry. In 1991 Sering acquired the Blue Babe Brand of saws and soon after met Mr. Bill Davenport, a 2nd generation owner operator of Chain Bar Repairing. Bill is a very hardworking, no-nonsense craftsman and true gentleman. “With his decades of expertise, we always received the very best performance from our saws and built a long-lasting relationship with him and his company,” said Marty.

Although it all happened very quickly, Marty Sering, President and owner of Sering Sawmill Machinery said, “It was natural for us.” “Our friend Bill knew that myself and a few other saw manufacturers were very interested in his company. Finally, at the young age of 73 he had decided to retire to his happy place in the countryside of Mississippi to be closer to family. He’s still keeping busy on his 20 acres estate.”

“A large amount of credit and gratitude for a seamless transition and very smooth relocation to Battle Ground, WA goes to our Bar Shop Supervisor, Todd Bossert. He was Bill’s understudy and right-hand man for over 31 years.”

“We hit the ground running and in the past 15 months we are proud to note we have manufactured 558 new bars and have repaired 354 additional bars. To date the longest bar we repaired was 13’ 9" and the longest new bar was 10’ long.”

Starting with a laser cut, hardened steel wear plate bar blank, each bar is hand crafted or repaired one at a time with exacting tolerances. Truly a new school meets old school art form! All hammered perfectly flat, precisely shaped and grooved. The process is far from glamorous, but something only a true expert can accomplish. For extra durability most lumber package and extreme duty applications, Sering bars get additional armor from a hard face stellite welding rod that is hand brazed one inch at a time to the chain rails.

A new or repaired saw bar with a new or properly sharpened saw chain typically enters into production peacefully cutting away with the saw chain cutting more or less ahead of the bar with very little pressure. Of course, as the saw chain loses its sharpness, the pressure on the chain increases and that’s when you start relying more on the chain bar rails and the tolerance of the chain groove to keep the saw chain guided tight and straight for the most efficient cuts. As most people in our industry know, the hardest worst things for a saw bar starts with a dull chain, improper lubrication, poor saw maintenance and operator error.
