Research Center Offers Pallet and Unit Load Short Courses

If you want to keep up with the latest in pallet and unit load design technology, consider attending the upcoming “Pallet Design in the 21st Century” or “How to Reduce Shipping Costs” short courses presented by the Center for Unit Load Design at Virginia Tech. These courses serve the interests of pallet companies and users who need to keep up with the latest in pallet and unit load design best practices.

Led by Dr. Mark White, professor emeritus Virginia Tech, these courses were recently revamped to include the new Best Load ® software. This innovative software program was launched late last year. Best Load offers complete pallet and unit load design analysis to help design the best pallet, packaging and transport unit every time.

The pallet design short course will be held April 17-18, 2012 at the Thomas M. Brooks Forest Products Center in Blacksburg, Va., near the Virgina Tech campus. The course will cover the effect of pallet design and selection on materials handling costs, fundamentals of new and remanufactured stringer class pallet design, designing block class pallets, and designing stringer class pallets using Best Load.

The unit load short course titled “How to Reduce Shipping Costs” will be held May 15-17, 2012 at the Thomas M. Brooks Forest Products Center. It is designed to meet the needs of packaging, pallet, and material handling equipment suppliers and users.

Taught by Dr. Mark White, the course will cover principles of unit load design, conducting material handling audit, packaging and pallet design, interactions between various components of unit loads, and diagnosing and solving material handling problems. It will focus on lowering unitization costs, reducing product damage, identifying opportunities in warehouse audits, and increasing material handling rates.

Short courses are a great way to connect with other pallet designers and users to learn best practices and discuss problems specific to your company. Attendees will have opportunities to discuss any challenges they face and get expert feedback. The short course is ideal for pallet companies that want to learn the latest packaging design principles to improve customer service and increase your competitiveness.

The short courses cost $900 each to attend. Center members may attend either short course for $500. Pallet Profile subscribers may attend for $800.
