Idea Box: Hot 2020 Buzzwords You Should Know

From acronyms to business jargon to technical terms, there seems to be a never-ending flow of new “buzzwords” that we hear and need to understand. Here’s a short list of some of the hot buzzwords that you are likely to hear this year, some of which you may already know about and others that you probably never heard of before:

 

Actionable Analytics – Data analysis that leads to actual concrete change.

 

Computer Vision – The ability of computers or software programs to extract detailed information from visual images or videos, essentially automating tasks that used to rely on human sight.

 

Hyperautomation – The application of advanced technologies, like artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) with the goal of automating processes typically performed by humans while helping people enhance their roles with advanced automation.

 

IoT – The Internet of Things, put simply, involves connecting physical objects we use every day to the Internet and to each other, to create a network that can gather and share electronic information.

 

ITL – The acronym for “invited to leave,” which means being fired.

 

Quantum Computing – Performed by computers that use quantum bits, instead of the simple binary code, for greater flexibility to solve problems that are much more complex.

 

Smart Industry 4.0 – The combination of automation and data sharing that ultimately results in “smart factories” that analyze their processes to find out where to make improvements, then share what they’ve learned with other factories so they can also make similar changes.

 

Technological Unemployment – The loss of jobs resulting from technological change.

 

VUI (Voice-as-User Interface) – This type of interface enables humans to interact with computers through voice. Alexa and Siri are examples. By the end of this year, experts predict that more than half of online searches will be voice searches.

 

Zillennials – A microgeneration of people born between 1995 and 2012, before the end of the Millennials and after the start of Generation Z.
