Every two years the pallet and lumber industries converge on Richmond, Va. in May for EXPO Richmond, which has become the largest pallet machinery show in the country. Sponsored by the Virginia Forest Products Association (VFPA), this show has become a bellwether indicator for the health of the pallet industry. Despite marginal growth in the overall economy, the initial news coming out of the show was positive.
Total attendance was down just a bit compared with 2010 with just under 5,000 people coming through the doors. But the total number of exhibitors grew from 265 to 278 this year.
“Although attendance was down a bit, the quality was good according to exhibitor surveys that we have received,” said Mike Washko, the show manager. “Response ranged from best show ever to just average all depending on the industry focus and exhibitor.” People the Enterprise staff talked with at the show indicated that many attendees came ready to buy not just browse.
Walking the aisles of EXPO Richmond, it was hard to get very far without seeing another familiar face. EXPO Richmond has become the best place every two years to see equipment being displayed and operated. It has also become a popular event for new products to be unveiled. This year didn’t disappoint. Check out the latest and greatest equipment innovation in the handy Richmond Equipment Review starting on page 22.
After the show closed on Saturday afternoon, most exhibitors agreed that the show was a success. Washko said, “Money changed hands. The show did what it was supposed to do bring buyers and sellers together.” This is a sign that the pallet industry continues to grow and has not started to fall back into a recession. Generally, equipment purchases slow down as pallet and lumber companies worry about waning sales.
Popular topics for discussion at the show included the upcoming elections, tight core supplies, the 9BLOC cooperative pool launch, and pallet prices and margins.
Put on by the VFPA and supported by Virginia Tech, EXPO Richmond has become a favorite for suppliers due to its established strong buying activity, low costs, limited hassle, and favorable location. Be sure to mark your calendar for the next event in May 2014 when the show returns again to the Richmond Raceway Complex. It is tentatively scheduled for May 16-17, 2014.

GBN Modifies its Patriot Nailing Machine to Build Complete Perimeter Based Block Pallets
Prior to EXPO Richmond, GBN had modified its well-known Patriot nailer so that its new version can build a complete perimeter based block pallet in one step. Prior to this development, a Patriot nailer had to go through two steps to build a CHEP, PECO, or 9Block pallet.
This new Patriot version of a GBN nailer was designed for and shipped to John Rock Pallet in Pennsylvania. The new machine was not demonstrated at the EXPO because it had already been shipped out to John Rock. Many readers are familiar with the Patriot and its flexibility. Now it can be modified to do the complete block pallet nailing job that is being demanded by the expanding block pallet market. It is no longer necessary to take two steps to make perimeter based block pallets on a Patriot. Many pallet builders prefer the Patriot to a high speed block pallet GBN system because of its economy and flexibility. Now it is even more flexible because it can be modified to build the block pallet which seems to be merging as the North American pallet of the future.
GBN indicates it is the only one that has developed a versatile single head system that will build both perimeter based CHEP style block pallets and stringer pallets correctly and productively. The Patriot can be quickly changed from one pallet to another, either block or stringer, making it a good starter nailing system for people who want to make block pallets with a lower investment.
Other single nailer systems have to pre-assemble the top deck mat and make the complete block pallet in two steps. The pre-assembled top deck is necessary due to the tight tolerances and nail patterns demanded by this spec. This includes using different nail sizes and clinching. A two nailing machine system has been required until now.

Storti Displays Flex 50 for First Time
Storti, distributed in North America by Pallet Machinery Group (PMG), has its Flex 50 nailing machine as one of its pallet nailing machines. This year Greg Wine and his Pallet Machinery Group displayed the Flex 50 for the first time at the Richmond EXPO. Storti is well known in Europe for its pallet nailing systems, which can nail both stringer and block pallets.
The Flex 50 nails a whole board at a time using mechanical drives. I nails at a speed of up to 70 deck boards a minute. Because it nails all of the fasteners in a joint with a single stroke, it can nail a six-inch board as fast as a four-inch board.
One of the most impressive engineering qualities of the Flex 50 is that it is available with a hydraulic across the grain clinching system. Greg Wine of PMG said, “This is the best clinching system I have ever seen. During the show, a number of pallet people commented about the superiority of this clinching system versus the common clinching systems available.”
The Flex 50 can be used to nail both stringer and block pallets, as well as nailing mats and skids. The machine is particularly quiet and very efficient. All chains and drives use electricity. Unlike many sophisticated nailing systems, the Flex 50 has only one hydraulic pump. An option is to put two Flex 50 nailers together to form a tandem nailing system.

Bronco Showcases New Stringer Remover
Bronco Pallet Systems, which has reputation for manufacturing simple and efficient pallet automation machines, has developed a stringer out machine that is designed to remove exterior stringers (runners). Called the Bronco 3-2-1 Saw, it enables a pallet recycler to easily turn a “B” grade pallet into an “A.” It uses a circular blade instead of a bandsaw which provides for a nice clean cut. Made with readily available parts, this new Bronco machine is easy to maintain and find replacement parts.

Innovative Data Adds Scan Capability for 9BLOC System, Stacked Pallets
Always looking to make inventory tracking easier, Innovative Data Systems demonstrated at EXPO Richmond a new scanning device and integration designed to allow a forklift driver to accurately scan a stack of pallets without having to get off the forklift. It can be setup where a forklift drives to a scan station and stops briefly to allow a scan device to run down the side of the pallets. This system scans all the pallets in the stack and tells the driver the total number scanned and gives him a green light to continue moving the pallets to the proper place.
In addition, Innovative Data is working with 9BLOC to integrate its various scanning technologies with the 9BLOC proprietary database. This will enable 9BLOC participants to efficiently count pallets coming in and going out of facilities. John Swenby of the 9BLOC leadership team said, “We are happy to be working with Innovative Data to integrate its tracking devices and software with our proprietary 9BLOC database and tracking system.” A wide variety of scanning options can be used to integrate with the 9BLOC system including the scanner towers, inline scanning, hand scanning, etc.

Noble Machinery Introduces Two New Pallet Hawg Machines
Noble Machinery introduced two new machines at the EXPO – the Pallet Hawg Cut-Off Saw and the Pallet Hawg Power Feed Trim Saw.
The cut-off saw is manufactured by Built With Skill and sold exclusively by Noble Machinery. Designed to end trim both new and recycled lumber, it comes with a 10 horsepower, 3 phase motor, three full height board stops, built-in fork pockets and double palm button actuation. If chosen with an 18” blade, it has a capacity of five inches by six inches, or if chosen with a 20” blade, a capacity of six” by six”.
The power feed trim saw is manufactured by Waechter Machinery and sold exclusively by Noble Machinery. It has an 18" nail resistant carbide tipped blade that is direct motor driven by a 10 horsepower saw arbor motor. The overhead blade design helps to hold the material down during the cutting process, and helps to eliminate kickback. The saw has four adjustable board stops, and will trim boards from 16" to 66" long up to 2-1/2" thick. It has a production rate of approximately 15,000 boards per hour.

Pallet Repair Systems Displays New Mechanical Repair Station
Pallet Repair Systems (PRS) revealed its new Mechanical Repair Station at the show. The station makes deckboard removal fast and easy by utilizing pneumatics to quickly remove any deckboard from a pallet. The machine operates on 100% pneumatic power, with a simple foot pedal control to actuate the cycle. A pallet is placed on top of the station and with the quick press of a lever, the desired deckboard is instantly removed. The removed board drops into the integrated lumber chute, which can be used as a conveyor port. The standard repair station is designed to handle 48”x40” pallets, but other models are also available.

Smart Products Introduces Front Discharge Dismantler
A new “front discharge” style pallet dismantler was introduced in Richmond by Smart Products. The machine, which has standard capacities of either 52” or 64”, was designed to allow disassembled boards to exhaust between the front and rear adjustable tables, to the front side of the machine, where a belt conveyor easily carries them to the next stage of lumber recovery. The machine was also built with the company’s new hydraulic blade tensioning system. This method of hydraulic blade tensioning allows for tighter bi-metal blade tensioning, which contributes to easier operation, more productivity/throughput, and improved blade life. Other safety and operational features include 4-corner perimeter guarding, door limit switches, and hydraulic pressure safety switch. The dismantler’s versatile design allows it to be operated as either a one-person or two-person dismantler. If the two-person operation is chosen, a removable pass back canopy guard is installed. SMETCO Presents X-Mold Spray Booth
SMETCO Inc. presented information on a new spray booth for applying X-mold treatment to pallets. The S-Fusion Electrostatic Pallet Sprayer offers a solution to the problems presented by dip tanks that soak wood that has been previously kiln dried. The sprayer applies enough anti-mold treatment to dampen only the outer surface of pallets, without soaking the pallet, leaving the core of the kiln dried wood remains untouched, thus reducing drying time.

Baker Products Introduces Improved NotchX2 Machine, Upgraded Dominator Band Sawmill
Designed for top-notch performance from top to bottom, the new and improved Baker NotchX2 packs dozens of smart productive features together in one sturdy, efficient machine.
The unscrambler is built right in. When stringers (runners) fall into the base of the unscrambler, they singulate and move individually into the hopper of the notcher. Brewer Unveils New Golden Eagle Board Conditioner
Versatility is the primary idea behind Brewer’s new three-way board conditioner. It is designed to provide up to three different lumber processing functions. This machine can be purchased with the following options: chamfer machine/board edger, chamfer machine/board edger/board planer by changing tooling on a single arbor, or chamfer machine/board edger/board planer that can edge boards and plane in one single pass on two separate arbors.
This board conditioner converts 5-1/2" # 2 cull boards into 3-1/2" premium boards without leaving edging strips. It will process boards ½” to 1-1/8” thick, 3-1/2” to 6” wide to 30" minimum to 60" maximum with a four dog set up.
The chamfer can make typical two chamfer grooves on each side of a board. Full length or one side only. Cutters are raised and lowered by an air cylinder that is activated by limit switches. Limit switches can easily be adjusted by loosening star handles and moving switch. The chamfer cutter uses 10" diameter (8) wing indexable carbide inserts. This is an outstanding improvement. Cutters stay sharp longer and run noticeably quieter.
Variable speed can easily be turned up to high volume and run with two operators or slowed down to run as one man operation. Controlled by knob on hydraulic unit. The arbor comes with a 15 HP TEFC 3600 RPM 220/440 3-phase motor. It is equipped with an outfeed accumulator. This is a gravity stacker that slides new boards under existing stock. Newman Machine Company Reveals Equalizing Double Planer
Newman Machine Company announced its new EQ3 Equalizing Double Planer while in Richmond. The EQ3 prepares boards to improve finishing quality with fewer defects and reduced splitting of cupped lumber. According to Newman, it is the first planer that properly pre-surfaces boards, which provides an improved divided cut over existing self-centering, opposed cut planers.
Defects that are common to the species as well as those that are introduced through sawing, drying or handling all combine to affect the quality and yield of the surfaced board. The EQ3 deals with this by equalizing the surfaces prior to finish planing, to produce an increased yield, higher quality finish and reduced split cupped lumber.
The EQ3 has three cutterheads, the bottom first (conditioning head), and top and bottom finishing heads. Both bottom cutter ¬heads are equipped with automatic cut control. With feed speeds between 50 feet and 350 feet per minute, it is available in widths of 18”, 24”, 30” or as a retro-fit module that can be added to most existing double planers.

Focusing on making log handling easier, Wood-Mizer Industrial has upgraded its WM3500 Horizontal Thin-Kerf Headrig with a new clamp. The heavy-duty design of the clamp and added functions give the operator ultimate control. It turns cants fast and offers extended height and width range.
The WM3500 is designed for a wide range of production capabilities. Use it as a principal standalone headrig or as a integrated breakdown saw in a large production operation for sawing high grade logs. Cresswood Develops Innovative Grinder Design for RPL
Cresswood announced at EXPO Richmond the development of a new fully-integrated Two-Stage, Low-RPM Chip Processing System, complete with closed-loop material handling, and magnetic separation, custom engineered for the Rehrig Pacific Logistics (RPL) Fiberboard Plant, recently opened in Easton, Penn.
“We’re really excited to be a part of this ground-breaking project for RPL, and for its supply chain distribution partners,” stated Jack Cress, CEO, of Cresswood. “In our opinion, with its focus on energy-efficiency, and on producing a uniquely ‘green’ fiberboard product, RPL Easton is raising the sustainability profile of wood pallets to a new level, and that’s a positive for the industry as a whole.”
According to RPL, its Easton facility utilizes scrap GMA pallets as raw material for producing RECB™ – Recycled Engineered Composite Board – a new proprietary wood product constructed of 100% recycled wood bonded using a formaldehyde-free MDI resin.
Describing the application, Jack commented that “the demands of RPL’s Easton plant for processing truckloads of scrap pallets at some really big volumes – up to 30,000 lbs per hour – down to a very uniform product size required a system with what we call ‘combo technology’. Cress said that specific factors drove the design of Cresswood’s two-step process for RPL’s chip production. “The first was the strength of our pre-shredder to handle batch-loading of bulky pallet material while being very tolerant of metal from nails and plates, and the second was our ability to optimize the capacity of our dual HF-60-100 Destroyer Grinders to provide superior quality chips to the downstream fiber line flaker at high volume rates,” he added. “Our system had to serve the needs of RPL’s innovative product, and raw material feed stock.”

Rotochopper Unveils New Horizontal Grinder
Rotochopper had the most recent model to join the Rotochopper line-up of horizontal grinders on display. The FP-66 is a mid-sized grinder that falls between Rotochopper’s B-66 and MC-266 grinders in weight and horsepower. With less horsepower and a lower weight than the B-66, the FP-66 is designed to meet the needs of wood waste recycling operations that do not have enough raw material volume for the B-66.
The FP-66 comes equipped with several exclusive features, including a concentric powerfeed lift, gap-less infeed transition, replaceable mount rotor, and hydraulic screen changer. A new firewood processor was displayed by Dyna Products at EXPO Richmond. The SC-12 Woodchuck firewood processor is a personal portable firewood processor. Rayco Manufacturing introduced a new self-propelled stump cutter. The RG100X is a high power backyard stump cutter. It has many performance enhancements over prior stump cutter models, including radio remote controls, giving the operator the option of using either the swing-out panel or the handheld control unit while remaining clear of flying debris. A low center of gravity and 4-wheel drive with high and low travel speed prevents turf damage and removable dual wheels that are easily removable to get through gated areas.
The RG100X comes with a 99 horsepower, 4-cylinder, diesel Kubota engine and a hydrostatic cutter wheel drive. Other features include a hydraulic backfill blade and swing-out chip containers. It has a cutting depth of 21.5”, a cutting height of 31” and a cutting width of 69”.
