The latest business casualty of the poor economy is Brunswick Box Co. of Lawrenceville, Va., which ceased operations of its lumber processing and automated nailing operations last month. A long-time fixture in the Virginia pallet market, Brunswick Box plans to continue its recycling operation of wood waste to produce colored mulch. In addition it will continue handling plastic waste to be recycled by other recyclers with whom it has networked over the years to keep these items out of the landfills and convert them into usable products.
There is a touch of irony in the fact that the Pallet Enterprise is celebrating its 30th anniversary this issue, and an aerial shot of Brunswick Box was on our first cover. This suggests an end of an era in the Virginia pallet market.
In a press release, Daven Lucy, the president of Brunswick Box, wrote, This decision to shut down was not an easy one. It is based on the current conditions of the economy, the ability to obtain raw materials, operational costs, and both current and upcoming regulations.
